Operation Community Care

The Rookie (ABC) cast and crew to distribute ‘Tactical Caring Kits’ to people who are dealing with homelessness in Los Angeles.

I’m very fortunate to have a roof over my head, food on my table, clean water to drink, a toilet, medicine, etc… things most of us take for granted.

But many people Los Angeles do not have these blessings…

…they go through life in a tremendous amount of pain, and often suffer the indignity of having their struggles put on full public display.

I’ve always wanted to help the folks in my own neighborhood who were struggling, many of whom are regular faces I see out on the street every day, but I was never quite sure how… the problem just seemed so massive.

But yesterday, our show boss Alexi Hawley sent out an email to the entire cast and crew of The Rookie, and introduced us to an idea that will hopefully make helping out a lot easier by suggesting we hand out ‘tactical caring kits’ to people in need.

Here’s what he said:

You can read a bit more of his thoughts here, but he essentially just encouraged everyone to take a few of these ‘Tactical Caring Kits’ home from the production offices and hand them out if or when the opportunity should ever arise.

Here’s what we included in our kits:

-1 pair of socks
-Toothbrush
-Toothpaste
-Floss
-Feminine hygiene products
-Body wipes
-Hand sanitizer
-Lotion
-Lip balm
-Deodorant
-First aid kit
-Slim Jims
-1 protein bar
-1 protein cookie
-1 extra resealable bag

Today (after feeling a little nervous at first) I handed out some of these kits to a few folks on the street…

…and I ended up having a great conversation with a guy in a wheelchair.

He told me he was an Army vet who had a stroke a few years back.

He apologized for his slurred speech.

He said his brain knows the words but his mouth can’t say them sometimes.

I told him my uncle and dad were vets who also had strokes.

He told me he fought in the First Gulf War.

I asked him what war was like.

He said the Army days were the best days of his life.

We talked about my uncle, one of my heroes, who also fought in the Gulf War.

We laughed about some military stuff.

He told me it was a great thing we were doing with the tactical kits and pointed me in the direction of a few of his friends that also could use them.

I told him if he ever needs anything to just let me know.

He thanked me for the bag of goodies… but he seemed a lot more interested in the conversation and that someone had taken the time to sit there and chat with him.

I think both of us cried a little, we both gained a new friend today.

All in all, it was a very positive experience and I’m glad I allowed myself to be a part of it.

Hopefully by posting about my experience I can (and we can) encourage others to do the same and help out in their own communities…

If we all do a little, it can really go a long way.

That said, if you are interested in doing something similar at your work, your church, or on your own, here’s what we included in our kits:

-1 pair of socks
-Toothbrush
-Toothpaste
-Floss
-Feminine hygiene products
-Body wipes
-Hand sanitizer
-Lotion
-Lip balm
-Deodorant
-First aid kit
-Slim Jims
-1 protein bar
-1 protein cookie
-1 extra resealable bag

You can use this template or go out and build your own. The key items to include are probably socks, dental care products, body wipes, proteins, feminine care products, lip balm, lotion, snacks, and deodorant.

I look forward to hearing about your own experiences doing this.

Thanks for reading and go with god.
